Ode to my husband

I am blessed!  Even when life is tough, I try to remember the blessings in my life.  One of those blessing is my husband, Brian.  Almost 12 years ago when we said, "for better or for worse, in sickness and in health," we never could have imagined how much we would be tested.  This amazing man has stood by me over the last 8 years as we have suffered loss, not once, but twice and has watched me suffer debilitating dizziness every day.  So, if you don't mind, I'd like to share with you a little bit about this man I call my husband.

He has an amazing heart for those less fortunate.  He loves to serve the orphans and the widows.  This is one of my favorite pictures that was taken while he was in Haiti just a few short weeks ago.  He hadn't been to Haiti since the summer of 2010.

He is an amazing dad to our daughters.  I love to just sit back and watch the way he gently instructs the girls and how he makes them think for themselves.  I love to listen to him read to the girls at night.  He has passed on his love of C.S. Lewis and the girls enjoy hearing him read the Chronicles of Narnia. I love how he takes them to dances and on dates.  It's so important that my girls know how a man should treat them when they starting dating. Daddy makes sure they know how loved and valued they are.

Brian loves to run and compete in triathlons.  I was so proud of him this last weekend when he competed in the Birmingham Mercedes Marathon and beat his PR by a landslide.  This was his 3rd marathon (Boston 2008 & Miami 2010) and by far his fastest.  I also love to watch how he encourages others to take up the sport.  I can't tell you how many people have started running because of Brian's gentle encouragement.

Brian, I wanted to publicly thank you for being an incredible husband and father.  I didn't want to wait until Father's Day or our anniversary to let you know how I felt.  Today just seemed like the perfect day.  I love you with all of my heart and I want to thank you for being such an amazing example of Jesus to me.  I know at times it's been hard to watch me suffer and know there is really nothing you can do to help me, but pray.  Those prayers mean the world to me.  Thank you for helping around the house and caring for the girls, when I just simply can't.  You are more than I could've ever asked for and I am so thankful God chose me to be your wife.

Onward

I've missed blogging.  I've missed you.  That may sound strange because most of you who still read my blog, I probably will never have the chance of meeting, but I feel a connection to you.  That's the funny thing about the blog world, you feel a sense of oneness with people you've never even met.  For my sweet friends who know me in real life and have told me they have missed reading my blog posts, thank you.  You don't know how much that means to me.

Most importantly, I've missed blogging for my sweet babies.  Every year at Christmas time I make a blog book for my girls.  They love them.  I felt guilty that this Christmas there was no blog book for them under the tree.  I was reminded of this the other day when Brooklyn took all 3 of her books to bed and was reading them.  Then Sydney, who is just learning how to read her sight words, chimed in and asked if I would read them to her.  They love to read the stories and look at the pictures of when they were much younger.  This is why I blog.  I miss giving them these stories.

With that said, I'm back.  I have alot of catching up to do.  Yikes.  They are getting so big and I want to remember these times, because they go by so fast.  So, Brooklyn and Sydney, mommy is back to blogging.  I can't promise that I will blog every day like I've tried to do in the past.  It will be, as the Spirit moves, as they say and I promise to get last years posts in a book for you soon.

There's no crying in football

Today's blog brought to you by my hubby.  Thanks honey.

Daddy is a little too obsessed with fantasy football. My daughters, then 3 and 5, sensed this. Instead of trying to cut back on my fantasy football, I decided to welcome them to my world and try to get them addicted, too. Rather than doing the more complex fantasy football where you pick individual players by position, I started a Yahoo 'pick'em' league. For this league, once a week you go online and pick the team you think will win.  You can't get any simpler than that. Based on her love of ballet, Sydney's team was named "I Rock The Tutu". Brooklyn's became "Zhu Zhu Princess" after her toy collection. I recruited my mother-in-law, who is so football obsessed I can't watch games with her, a brother-in-law, and my only two friends who are more addicted to fantasy football than me, to round out our league.

Last year, I'd name off the cities and names for each team, and the girls would pick. This year, I'd start to say the city and they'd cut me off before I'd get to the team. I'd say "Green Bay..." and they'd yell "Packers!". Both girls had learned the names of every NFL to go with the city, although there are occasional pronunciation issues with the Raibers and the Rabens.

The girls have a funny way of picking teams.

Brave Girl

I decided to take Sydney to a new doctor to see if we can pin point what is causing her tummy aches.  This doctor is an MD, but practices alternative medicine.  Basically, instead of treating the symptoms with medicine, he tries to get to the route of the problem.  Most of the time with diet change, you can cure alot of ailments.

Today they had to do a blood draw.  I have been dreading this for over a week since I made the appointment.  At the last appointment they had to prick her finger to check her iron and she went crazy.  She cried and cried.  I had visions of this being much worse, flailing on the table and blood going everywhere.  Ok, maybe I've watched to many episodes of ER, but none the less, I was not too excited about today.

I made Brian go with me.  I was not going to try to hold her down by myself.  Don't let that sweet smile fool you, Sydney is one tough cookie.  Well, it turns out I didn't need Brian after all.  Syd did awesome.  She started to cry as they put the band on her arm and then when the nurse stuck the needle in, she cried a little harder, but she held still so they could get 2 vials of blood.

She was so proud of her sparkly bandaids.  I promised her a special treat if she did a great job at the doctor.  I kept my promise.  She picked out some rainbow popcorn and boy did she love it.

We should have the results in 4 weeks.  The bloodwork will tell us what foods she is sensitive to and we will cut those out of her diet to see if that makes a difference.  Please be in prayer that we can find the culprit.  I am so tired of seeing my baby in pain.

First Day of Preschool

Sydney had her first day of preschool today and it went fabulous.  She woke up this morning and the first thing she said was, "Mommy, is it time to go to school now?"  I think the fact that Brooklyn has been going to school for the last few weeks has helped get Sydney excited.

She loves her teacher, Ms. G.  She's awesome.  She is spunky and fun.  Today she wore rain boots and braids in her hair.  She's adorable and yes, she's a mom as well.  Love it.  Syd ran up and gave her a hug right away.  Ms. G had to tell Syd to say goodbye and give me a kiss.  She was ready to go.  I was actually fine with that because it was better than the alternative of kicking and screaming.

It's been raining almost non stop for 2 days so taking some pictures outside was not an option.  I snapped this picture with my iPhone just right out of class.  Here are some of Sydney's favorites.

I wish she had her jacket off in the picture because you can't see her pretty dress.  Oh well, there's always next year.  After I asked Sydney some of the favorites listed above, she continued to tell me some of her other favorite things.  Sydo, when you are reading this in 10 years, here's what else you liked back in 2011 when you were 4.

Favorite Place:            Chuck E Cheese (Of course, this one makes mommy gag.  Sorry baby).
Favorite Restaurant:    Cracker Barrel
Favorite Animal:         Pigs (Because you saw a momma pig with her 18 piglets at the fair this summer)
Favorite Color:           Purple, Pink and Red

Looking forward to a great school year.

Look out Food Network

there's a new chef in town.  I think we could be staring at the next Rachael Ray.  Syd even sounds like her with her raspy voice.

Dad's Day

The girls helped me make breakfast for daddy this morning. They even helped me make his favorite, Chocolate Croissants. Ok, so I know this looks like something that should be served for Mother's Day, but I felt like my hubby was man enough to be served breakfast in bed.
The girls felt like joining him.  I'm loving the bedhead. (Sorry the photo stinks.  I used my brand new iPhone.  I don't know what happened.  Ugh!)
The highlight of our day was taking a canoe trip after church.  We went down the Harpeth River and had a ton of fun.  I didn't know how the girls would do since you have to sit pretty still, but they did awesome.  Towards the end, Sydney was getting tired.  She kept asking me when it was going to end.  The problem is I had no clue.  It's not like there are signs or anything to tell you where you are.
It took us about 2 hours to go 3 1/2 miles.
We stopped about an hour in to let the girls get out of the boat and stretch their legs.  They loved finding some seashells and playing in the rocks.
We had a fantastic day!  I am so thankful that I have such an amazing husband who is such a great dad.  The girls love him so much.  Thanks honey for all you do to provide for our family and for loving Jesus!  I read this quote today that I loved and wanted to share it with you.

“The greatest thing a FATHER can do for his children, is to love their mother."
 -Anjaneth Garcia Untalan

I can't sign off without wishing a Happy Father's Day to my wonderful dad.  I am so blessed to have a father that has shown unconditional love to me and my sisters.  He was there at every soccer and softball game I ever played, every choir performance I sang in, and now we are doing races together.  At 71 years old, he is my hero.  I love you more than words can say.  I will always be your little girl.

Sweet Sydney Kate

Dearest Sydney,

Happy 4th birthday my sweet baby.  How is it that you are already 4?  It seems like yesterday your daddy and I were driving to the hospital that early Friday morning in March.  I was so excited and a little nervous to have another baby in the house.  Brooklyn was so excited to become a "big sister" although at 19 months I don't think she really knew what that truly would mean.

The moment I laid eyes on you, I just cried.  I was so happy you were here, safe and sound.  I couldn't wait to hold you.  You were so beautiful.  You looked just like your daddy and still do.
I love how sensitive and caring you are.  If you see someone hurt, you run to them and ask them if they are ok.  When you hear an ambulance, you say, "Mommy stop.  We have to pray for them".  I love how at night when I am putting you to bed you say, "Mommy pray for me.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to come and for Satan to go away".  You love me to sing Jesus Loves Me while I scratch your back.  You favorite thing to do is cuddle with me.  Will you still want to cuddle with me when you are 13?
I love how rough and tumble you are.  You will run daddy over just like a linebacker.  You fall and get hurt and you just get up and keep on going.  I think the tough exterior you put on is really just a front for the princess you like to be.  You love to dance and sing.  I love to listen to you make up songs.  Syd, it won't surprise me one bit if you grow up to be a singer and a dancer.  You love to be on stage.  You aren't afraid of people.  You love to go up to complete strangers and ask them their names.
You love your big sister so much.  When she's gone on Fridays at school you don't know what to do by yourself.  You miss her.  The first thing you do when you see her is say, "Hello sissy" and you give her hugs and kisses.  That means the world to me.
You are so strong willed.  I know sometimes that gets on mommy's nerves and sometimes I yell and lose my patience with you and for that I am sorry.  I want you to know that I love that about you.  I love that you are fiesty, stubborn, and not afraid to speak your mind.  That will come in handy for you when you get older.
Most importantly Sydney Kate, I want you to know just how blessed I am to be your mommy.  I am so glad God gave me you.  You are my life and I love you to the moon and back.  Keep loving Jesus and keep praying for all the sippy cups. :)

Scarlet Fever

I have always liked the name Scarlet, but when it's followed by the word fever, not so much.  I noticed a rash all over Sydney's tummy on Friday night when I was putting her to bed.  I went downstairs after she fell asleep and googled, "scarlet fever".  I just knew that she had it.  Thankfully the pediatrician is open on Saturday mornings so I took her in.  He looked at her throat and said, "It's Scarlet Fever".  I knew it.  For once I was right.

She had been on Amoxicillin the week before, but it didn't work and once again, I knew it.  Do you ever get those mama instincts with your children that something is just not right?  I did last week.  Tuesday I called the nurse and said, "I don't think the Amoxicillin is working".  She said, "Well we like to give it 4 days to work and since today is day 4 let's just see what happens".  I agreed with her, but was still uneasy.  Sydney wasn't complaining that her ear hurt anymore so I figured that maybe it was working.  Deep down though I knew it wasn't.  I can't really tell you why I felt that way I just did.

A Very Merry UnBirthday, To Me!

Sydney's birthday is actually next week, but since next week is Spring Break, I decided to have her party early so most of her friends could come.  I'm glad I did.  She had a wonderful ballerina party for her 4th birthday.  11 little girls came over to the house and we set up the basement so they could twirl and dance til their hearts content.  I hired a real ballerina, Ms. Callie, to come and dance with the girls.  She was fabulous!  She showed them how to put on ballet shoes and she even put up their hair like a ballerina would wear it.

Even Grandma Sara, Brian's mom, got into it.  She was helping the girls touch their toes.  She is one flexible grandma if I do say so myself.

Sneak Peak

I'm finally sitting down at the computer for the first time in 4 days.  It's been a crazy weekend, but a wonderful weekend too.  Thursday after Sydney got home from school she said her head hurt really bad.  She's never complained of a headache so I knew something was up.  I felt her forehead and she felt warm to me.  I took her temp and she had a low grade fever of 99.7.  I am fearful of fevers with her because she's had 2 febrile seizures, which are awful, and so now at the slightest hint of a fever I give her Motrin.  I hate giving her medications, but for me it's the lesser of two evils.

I took her to the dr. on Friday because she started to complain that her ear was hurting.  I also had to rule out the flu because her birthday party was on Saturday and I couldn't expose the rest of the kids to the flu if she did have it.

Stuck Like Glue

I was expecting a relaxing day at home after I dropped off the girls at school. I had a million things to do, on my list that really needed to get done, but that wasn't meant to be. I had just walked in the door at about 10:30 when my cell phone rang. My heart raced. I knew it was the school. I panicked. Which child and was it serious? I picked up the phone. "Hi Krista, It's Ms. B". I just said, "Is Sydney OK?" "Yeah she's fine", she said, "But I think you might want to come and get her". She went on to tell me that Sydney was playing on the playground and tripped and fell face first into the chain link fence surrounding the playground. She told me she may need stitches.

I immediately got back into my car and drove to their school. I also called my dad, since he lives just about 5 minutes from the school, because I knew he could get there before I could. I got to the school and Papa was holding Syd. She wasn't crying, but seemed content sucking on her heart sucker. They got the bleeding to stop after awhile and they had put a band aid on her forehead. I called my doctor and they told me to bring her in right away.
After the doctor inspected her cut, he determined he could glue it instead of stitch it. The cut was deep enough that something had to be done, but it wasn't long enough for stitches. It would only take one stitch and then she would have the two dots where the needle went in and since it was on her face, we didn't want to go that route. Thank the Lord! She handled it like a trooper and I took her to Old McDonald's, as she calls it, for an ice cream cone and to play on the playground. I truly am so thankful to the Lord that it wasn't any worse. That she didn't catch her eye on the fence when she fell. That it wasn't deeper and bigger that it required stitches. Thank you Lord for your hand of protection on my sweet Sydney Kate.

Rub A Dub Dub...

little girl in a tub. This is one of Sydney's favorite places to lay and watch t.v. Yes we have a small t.v. in our bathroom. It only gets 8 channels, but I like to watch the news in the morning when I am getting ready. Most little kids would jump in their parents bed on a Sat morning and watch cartoons, but since we don't have a t.v. in our bedroom, this is the next best spot.

I just love Saturdays. It's the one morning I get to sleep in, thanks babe. Today it is cold and flurrying, so it's a good day to stay inside and get some work done around the house. Brian and Brooklyn went to the grocery store to get some food in case it does decide to snow a ton and leave us housebound. That's doubtful, but I'd rather be prepared. We live on top of a hill and if we get too much, it makes it almost impossible to get down our street. This Cali girl definitely is not driving in it. I'll admit I really don't know how to drive in the snow, so I would rather just stay at home and be safe. This is why I could never live anywhere north of Tennessee. I don't do cold well. It's ok, call me a wimp. I can take it.

Sydney just asked me to join her in the bathtub so I think I will go snuggle with my baby girl. This should be interesting.

Jump for Joy, Oh my Lord

The girls had their Christmas program at school on Tuesday. I really look forward to their programs. They are so fun and you never know what they are going to do. For example, last Christmas, Sydney cried the whole entire time she was on stage. I couldn't believe. I told her this year, if she did a good job, she could get a treat when it was over. A little bribery never hurt anyone I say and she thouroughly enjoyed her cupcake.

As you will see, she did not cry this time. The 3 year old classes sang 2 songs and this was the first song they did. Sydney is the 6 child from the left. She's sandwiched in between 2 boys and right over the teachers head. You can't miss her. If you listen closely you can hear her singing. She enjoyed herself up there.

The next song they sang was one of my favorites. I think it's because she would sing it around the house all the time. She lost her santa hat about 20 seconds in, but she recovered like a true professional.

Tomorrow I will showcase Brooklyn's performance.

The Intervention

When Brian and I got married almost 10 years ago, there was one thing we decided not to do when we got married. This came highly recommended from a friend of his who had been married for a long time. He told Brian that he shouldn't put a t.v. in the master bedroom. I remember when Brian first told me about the conversation he had with his friend I thought he was nuts. My whole single life I always had a t.v. in my room and I just assumed when you got married you carried on with that tradition. I have to be honest, I wasn't totally sold on the idea, but I went along with it to be a good wife.

Can I tell you it was probably one of the best decisions we have ever made in our marriage. I don't miss it at all. We're able to talk and pray together before falling asleep instead of letting the t.v. put us to sleep. We also decided that we would never let the kids have a t.v. in their rooms either, so it shocked me when Sydney, who is just 3, came up and asked me if she could have a t.v. in her room. Over my dead body I told her. You may disagree with me on my stance here with children having t.v.'s in their room and that's ok, but I just don't think it's healthy for a child to have a t.v. in their room, period. I believe we are raising a generation of young people who would sit in front of a t.v. all day long if we let them. I'm speaking from experience here and it's not something I am proud of. Gone are the days that kids went outside and played until the street lights came on. Do you remember those days? I do and they were wonderful and I want my girls to have that same experience.

I have come to the conclusion, over the last month or so, that Sydney is addicted to television. She needed an intervention. The child could sit there all day and watch it if I let her. I have to say that over the last couple of months since losing Jonathan, the girls have watched more t.v. than I would have liked, but there were some days I just couldn't get out of bed and so unfortunately the t.v. became the babysitter. I'm sure most moms can relate to that. It's not something I beat myself up over, but it was the truth, and something needed to be done about it.

On Friday night I told Brian what I wanted to do and he supported me all the way. Saturday morning we took the big flatscreen out of our playroom upstairs. Sydney went ballistic. I knew she would, but I was not prepared for the major tantrum she was going to throw. It broke my heart. Not because she was crying, but because of the fact she loved t.v. so much. She carried on for about 20 minutes until daddy took her downstairs. She just kept saying, "Don't take my t.v.. Please don't take my t.v. away". It reassured me I was doing the right thing.

Now the upstairs hang out has become a place where we can read books and play games as a family and I love it. It is so peaceful coming up the stairs and not seeing that big box staring back at me. I'm going one step further and posting the t.v. on Craig's List tonight. I want it gone. I don't want any temptation for putting it back. We've also decided to drop our cable to the very basic channels. Now that's a really big step for us, but one I feel our family needs to take. Sydney wasn't the only one addicted. I too was addicted. I'm a person that would have it on even if no one was home just for the noise. Anyone else do that? I guess I just wanted some company. Since our loss, I have turned off the t.v. and turned on the praise music. It is something that has helped in my healing process. I can't tell you what a comfort it is to my soul.

Here's what I have realized. Life is so short and I don't want to regret the hours I spent in front of the t.v. when I could have been making memories with my children. I want my children to remember the fun and active things we did as a family and not the movies they watched.

I would love to hear from you if you have taken this step in your family. Maybe you have removed the t.v. from your home all together. I would love to get to that point (we still have 2 t.v.'s left in the house). I think I'm just looking for some moral support because I know this is not going to be easy.

Well off to post on Craig's list. If you are in the Nashville area and would like to buy a 52 inch flatscreen let me know. Ha. :)

Into My Heart

What is the one thing your child could say that would make you happy? I've always thought it would be her first "mama", or "I love you mommy". While those things made me smile when she said them, today's words made me cry.

We had just pulled into our parking spot at church when all of a sudden from behind I hear a little voice say, "Come into my heart God". I jumped out of the front seat and opened up the sliding door and said, "Sydney, do you want to ask Jesus into your heart"? Without hesitation she said yes. I said, "OK, I am going to lead you into a prayer and I want you to say it after me." With tears in my eyes, I lead my precious 3 year old in a prayer. She repeated every word I said verbatim. I was such a proud mama. I leaned over and gave her a kiss. I knew this day would come, but I didn't realize it would be at such a young age. She's always asking lots of questions about God and where He lives. I think it just finally clicked for her.

To my sweet Sydney Kate. Today has been one of the best days of my life. What an honor and a privilege it was to lead you in prayer to ask Jesus into your heart. There is nothing in the world you could ever do that would bring me greater joy than to know you love Jesus. I pray that you will be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's leading for your life. I know He is doing a great work in you because I see it in how you love people. You love to go up to people and ask them their names and just sit and talk with them. When you find out a friend is sick you stop and pray for them. You prayed over your friend Grace last week when she was sick. On the way to school last week an ambulance went by and you said, "Mommy, are we going to pray for them"? You told me to turn off the radio and I prayed and then you prayed too. I love your sensitive heart my baby. I pray that the Lord will bless you and keep you safe under the shadow of His wings. I love you so much.

Happy Birthday Sydney Kate

Dearest Sydney Kate,

Happy Birthday baby girl. I cannot believe you are 3 already. How can this be? You are growing up into a beautiful little princess. I am so proud to be your mommy.

I'm not sure if I've ever told you the story about how mommy and daddy decided on your name. I thought today would be a good day to do that. We always knew your name would be Sydney if you were a girl. Your daddy and I love to travel and Sydney is a place we have always wanted to go.

We had two middle names picked out for you and we were having a hard time deciding between the two. In fact, we didn't figure it out until you were 2 days old. It was between Kate and Grace. I remember the nurse coming in and telling us we had to make a decision because the hospital wanted to print up your birth certificate.

As you know the rest of the story, we decided on Kate. Sydney Kate Lord. We love your name. We hope you do too. It suits you so well. We realized shortly after you were born that your name matched two of our favorite characters from our favorite shows. Sydney Bristow from Alias and Kate Austen from LOST. The similarities are a little freaky. Both girls have brown hair. Both girls have dark eyes. So do you. They are both strong, athletic and fiesty. So are you.

You love to run and tackle daddy. You will run and fall down and get back up like it's no big deal. You love to climb on top of the kitchen island and scale the back of the couch. You are all tom boy. Not sure if that will last, but for now, you are thrilled if you are going 100 miles an hour.

I love you to the moon and back,
Mommy

Party Time!

Yesterday we had Sydney's 3rd birthday party right after church. I was thankful it was just family because it had been a stressful week and I didn't have to worry about having my house all clean and tidy.

About a month ago I asked Sydney what theme she wanted for her birthday party and she said Mickey Mouse, so Mickey Mouse it was. I had everyone over for a hot dog lunch. I thought it was appropriate since the theme song of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is "Hot dog, hot dog, hot diggety dog". I wanted to make the lunch as healthy as possible to show people you can still eat the typical party food and do it in a healthy way.

We had organic beef hot dogs, organic chicken sausages, organic baked beans, 7 layer bean dip (with all organic ingredients) served with organic tortilla chips and whole wheat hot dog buns. Everyone loved it. (I won't claim that this was low in calories, it just didn't have the chemicals, MSG, hormones, antibiotics and nitrates that the non organic would have).

(My new butler's pantry my brother-in-law made for me. He rocks! It just needs to be painted black now).

(Daddy praying for the meal. Nana is next to Sydney on the left and Auntie RoRo on the right)

After lunch we headed on over to Chuck E Cheese. Sydney was so excited. It's on of her favorite places to go. We took her cake that I made and her presents to Chuck E Cheese and we did that first before the kids went off to play.

Brooklyn's gift to her sissy was a Calliou book and a Calliou doll. It's her favorite show!

They had a blast. The best part is that she was able to have a great party on a small budget. For all the food, decorations and tokens at Chuck E Cheese it cost me under $100. That's including her cake that cost me $7.50 to make. Now that's a deal.

My little champ

We headed up to the Children's hospital today for Sydney's EEG. We decided to get the test run just to be sure there is no underlying seizure activity going on. My two youngest sisters and Brian's brother all have seizure disorders, so we want to make sure that the seizure that she had was do to a spike in fever and nothing genetic.

On the way to the hospital Syd kept saying she was excited to go to the doctor. It was hilarious. I don't know too many 2 year olds that are happy to see the doctor. When we got back into the room they had the little t.v. on. It was playing her favorite show, Caillou. Thank you Jesus! She laid still the whole 30 minutes it took the tech to scrub her head, put on the glue and leads and finally wrap her head in gauze.

The first test they had her do was to blow a pinwheel really fast. They were trying to get her to hyperventilate. Yeah, that didn't really work. She would just blow hard one time and try to hold it. I had one too and tried to show her how to do it, but she wanted to do it her way.

The next test about made me sick. The strobe light test. This test goes on for about 2 to 3 minutes in about 15 second intervals. If you have epilepsy this strobe light can send you into a seizure. I had to look away, but Syd loved it. She hardly closed her eyes and she was looking right into the light. I was glad when that test was over.

The final thing they needed her to do was go to sleep. I kept her up until 10:00 p.m. last night in hopes she would be ready for a nap by her appointment time at 1:00. I came prepared. I brought her blankie, sippy cup with almond milk and her noise machine. I got to crawl up in bed and lay with her. When the tech turned out the lights it took Sydney about 3 minutes and she was out. They only needed her to sleep for 10 minutes so when time was up I had the task of waking her. She did not want to wake up. Bless her heart she was doing everything she could to lay back down. She was so tired. The tech decided to turn the t.v. back on to see if that would wake her up. That did the trick, or I should say Curious George did the trick. She woke up.I was so proud of her. It was funny because when we were done I couldn't get her to leave the room. She wanted to stay and watch Curious George. I finally told her we had to go see Papa (my dad) who was waiting in the waiting room for us and I also reminded her that we were going to go get some ice cream. She was out the door lightening fast.

I was reminded of how blessed I am as we left the hospital. When we got on the elevator to go down to the parking level, 2 young kids, a boy & a girl, got on the elevator with us. Both had bald little heads covered by caps. I immediately started to get teary eyed. All I could do was pray. Pray that God would show mercy on these 2 precious kids and heal their diseased ridden bodies. So many questions went through my mind at that moment. What painful procedure had they just endured? What must it be like for their parents to watch them be so sick? Did they know that God loved them? It made me hold Sydney a little tighter and be so thankful that my child is healthy.

I didn't intend for this post to go down this road, but I felt the Lord's nudging to do so. So here it is. If you would join me in prayer for some sweet little girls battling cancer, I know their families would really appreciate it. Some of you are probably already doing so, but if not, I would love to tell you about them. All 3 of them I have followed their blogs for some time now and to say they are an inspiration to me would be an understatement. Their parents are enduring a nightmare, but yet continue to have faith even when it doesn't seem like their is much hope. Layla Grace will most likely go home to see Jesus within the next few days. Please check out her blog and pray for this sweet family. Kate also is battling a deadly tumor in her brain and is currently in the hospital in treatment. Her dad has listed some specific prayer requests on her site. Lastly, a friend of the family back in California, her daughter Kendyl was diagnosed with leukemia at the end of last year. Kendyl loves to get postcards in the mail. Her mom says the highlight of her day is going to the mailbox to see if she has received any postcards. Would you be willing to send her a postcard from your hometown?

What a privilege it is to stand in prayer for one another. Thank you for your prayers for Sydney and thank you in advance for your prayers for these sweet girls and their families.

Update: 3/9 Sweet Layla Grace is in the arms of Jesus this morning. Please pray for this sweet family.

Syd-isms

Today I thought I would post a couple of Syd-isms as I like to call them. Sydney Kate is my spunky almost 3 year old. I think she does or says something almost daily that makes me bust out laughing. I like to blog about them to help me remember them, but also so I can use them against her when she is in her teens and thinks she is too cool for mom.

Last Saturday I took Sydney on a mommy daughter date with me since Brooklyn was on a daddy daughter date with Brian. It was a beautiful spring like day and I was determined to get out of the house. I decided that I would take her to Target. As we were walking through the automatic doors I hear this sweet little voice say, "Thanks". It took me a couple of seconds until I realized it was Sydney saying thank you to the doors for opening up and letting her in. I just started cracking up.

Sydney is very polite and constantly says thank you to people, but this took it to a whole new level. I don't know how many times we've walked through those same doors at Target, probably 100 times in her lifetime, and this was the first time she had noticed it.

The other night, Brian was putting Sydney Kate to bed and he gave her a good night kiss and said, "I love you Syd". To which she replied, "You stink daddy. Look that way." and pointed the other direction. In Brian's defense I cooked garlic and tomato pizza that night and he hadn't had time to brush his teeth yet. Kids are so honest aren't they?
We took the girls swimming the other day at the gym (It was an indoor pool obviously) and I took this photo in the girls locker room. Here's the thing about Sydney, she is rough and tumble and not afraid to take risks. What you don't see in this picture is that she then proceeds to lift up her legs so she is hanging upside down in the locker. I put a stop to that real quick before she landed on her head. I don't need anymore trips to the ER. 2 in four months is plenty.

Syd may be a little tom boy, but don't let that rough exterior fool you. She is as sweet and sensitive as any little girl could be. She cries when you cry. She will say, "Mommy you sick?" "I pray for you". It's so funny to watch her play with her dolls and her puppy dog. She will say to them, "Sweetheart, you ok?" "Mommy's here, I hold you". It's hysterical when she puts them in time out. Oh my word. If you ever forget that a child watches every little move you make, you soon won't when you watch them punish their dolls.

She turned to her doll and said, "You are in time out and don't get up until I tell you you can". Then she will resort to spanking her doll if her doll doesn't listen.
Oh the joys of being a mommy to a toddler and a preschooler. I love it and wouldn't change it for the world even on the hard days.

What funny things have your kids said lately?
